Virginia (Virgie) Marie McDannel Virgie McDannel passed away November 1, 2007 at Calhoun Health Care in Calhoun, Georgia.
Virgie was born Virginia Marie Bowman on September 14, 1919 in Boones Mill, Virginia to George and Mary Bowman. She grew up on a dairy farm with five brothers and sisters.
Virgie graduated from Virginia State Teacher's College in Harrisburg, Virginia. On June 9, 1945 she married Rufus McDannel and they pastored churches in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Alabama, and Kentucky. They had three children, a son and two daughters. Virgie taught school for several years as well as being a pastor's wife and mother.
Upon retirement Virgie and Rufus moved to Cleveland, Tennessee where they helped to start two churches in the area. Virgie lost her husband in April, 1996. She moved to Calhoun, Georgia in January, 1998 to be near her daughter and family. She was a member of the Calhoun Seventh-day Adventist Church where she enjoyed serving on the phone committee and folding the church newsletters.
Virgie's kindness, generosity, spirit of thanksgiving, strong faith in God and belief in prayer will be remembered by those who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus McDannel, parents George and Mary Bowman, a sister Flora Thomas and a brother Bruce Bowman. Virgie is survived by a son, Jess McDannel of Springville, AL; two daughters, Mary May of Calhoun, GA and Becky Carlson of Ooltewah, TN; a brother, Willard Bowman of Boones Mill, Virginia; two sisters, Geneva Urban of Newburg, OR and Doris Nolley of Stuarts Draft, VA; three grandchildren; several step grandchildren and great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate Virgie's life on Saturday, November 10 at 4:00 p.m. at the Calhoun Seventh-day Adventist Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Calhoun Seventh-day Adventist Church for Coble Elementary School or the Voice of Prophecy.
