Verta Louise Stephens

Sunday, May 25, 2008 Mrs. Verta B. Stephens, age 81 of 288 Mt. Vernon Drive, Calhoun, died Saturday evening May 24th. in Gordon Health Care Center following several months of declining health. Verta was born in Bartow County on October 23rd. 1926 daughter of the late Robert Frank and Lillie Mae Brookshire Bailey Sr. She was a homemaker, a member of the Calhoun Community Church, the Sonora Eastern Star where she was past Worthy Matron and a member of the Red Hat Society at Morning Point. The Stephens Family “Clay, Verta and Retta” conducted services at Morning Point and Local Nursing Homes for years. She loved to play the piano and has played for many funerals and various churches over the years. Verta loved to garden and especially loved her roses. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years Clay Stephens, one daughter; Retta S. Ledbetter of Calhoun, one brother Daimon Bailey of Kennesaw, one sister; Velma Jean McCamy of Lookout Mt., Ga. and two grandchildren; Jon Ledbetter and Clay Peek. Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday May 28th. from the Calhoun Community Church with Rev. Jerry Rice and Rev. Lamar Hand officiating. Rev. Mark Atwood will conduct the committal services with interment to follow in the Gordon Memorial Gardens. Eulogies will be given by Clay Peek and Cary Studdard . On Wednesday the body will lie instate at the Church from 10:00 until the funeral hour. Pallbearers serving include Danny Cline, Harold Stamey, Grady Burger, Tyler Williams, Richard Brookshire and Ed Williams and they are asked to meet at the Church at 9:45 A.M. Wednesday. Honorary pallbearers include , Staff of Morning Point, Stall of Gordon Health Care, Col. Jim Franklin, Bill Lovern, Leroy Whitfield, Paul Gentry and Carl Riserson and these people are asked to meet at the Church at 10:45 A.M. Wednesday. Music will be arranged by Cary Studdard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 until 9:00 P.M. on Tuesday eveing.
