Velma Lee "Cindy" Gravitt

Velma L. “Cindy” Milam Gravitt, age 91 of Calhoun, died on Friday, July 20 at her residence. Cindy was born, June 1, 1921 in Franklin County, Arkansas, daughter of the late Joe Seaphas Morgan and Emily Clyde Turner Morgan. Also, she was preceded in death by her husband Audie Milam; two sons, Michael Milam on March 5, 1993 and Danny Milam on June 19, 2007; sisters, Clara Word, Eulame Dickerson and Jean Milam; brothers, J.D. Morgan and Rufus Morgan. Cindy was a member of the Barrett Road Church of God and had taught Sunday school for over 36 years in Bakersville and Calhoun. She was a charter member and organizer of the Assembly of God-Pentecostal Church of Calhoun. After visiting Hawaii, she was known as “Kahuna” after learning the Hula wearing two coconuts and a grass skirt. Cindy is survived by her husband, Kenneth H. Gravitt of Calhoun; daughters, Dena Shortt and her husband Bill of Bakersville, California, Debbie Cooley and her husband Clint of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Saundra Milam of Calhoun, Linda Ollis and her husband Gary of Calhoun; granddaughters, Deanna Dickerson and Connie Polm of Bakersfield, Apryl Milam of Cumming, Rachel and Amy Taylor of Seattle; grandsons, Steve Clifton, Eric Clifton and Joshua Ollis all of Calhoun, Alan Pierce and Timothy Pierce of Illinois, Ben and Daniel Milam of Rome, Kevin, Joshua and Mike Milam of Bakersville; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins of Charleston, Arkansas. She is also survived by a daughter in law, Teresa Milam of Rome; a sister in law, Jane Fowler of Calhoun; step-children, Betty LaGume of Roswell, Michael Lipscomb; Dewey Gravitt of Resaca, Kevin Gravitt of Resaca, and Melissa Guinterro of Resaca; special friends, Wilma Sexton, Linda Robinson, Mary Lou Hilley, and Jean Goble. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Monday, July 23 at the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Brother Ray Robinson and Reverend Norris Sexton officiating. Burial will be in Chandler Cemetery. Musicians are Peggy Serritt, Eleanor Silvers, and Keith Thomas. Active pallbearers are Jeremy Potter, Randy Rilling, Tony Gentry, Dathan McDaniel, Keith Thomas, and William Serritt. Honorary pallbearers are Gary and Lance Ollis, Kenny Fowler, Travis Cordell, Ben and Daniel Milam. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday July 22, 2012 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Thomas Funeral Home has charge of arrangements for the services of Velma L. “Cindy” Gravitt of Calhoun.
