Thomas " Tom" Herrin Bond

Thomas Herrin Bond, age 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 25th at his home here in Calhoun. Tom was born on August 13, 1929 at home. His parents were Jean and Bill Bond. He had a brother, William who was born 13 months earlier. He graduated from the Baylor School in Chattanooga. Mr. Bond then attended Emory University and graduated from The University of Georgia in 1951. He married Louise Fite on August 29th, 1951 and served in United States Air force from1951-1955. He began his career in banking with Citizens and Southerns Bank in Atlanta and remained with C & S for 25 years. In 1975 he and Louise moved back to Calhoun where he became President of The Gordon County Bank. He served in that position until 1987, when he retired from banking. Mr. Bond served on the Calhoun City Council for 12 years and was an active member of the Industrial Development Authority. He was also a past president of the Chamber of Commerce. While serving in these positions he was instrumental in getting the BB&T Bank to donate the property for the City Park. He worked to restore the Calhoun Depot and also worked hard to develop Fields Ferry Golf Course. While working with the Gordon County Historical Society, he helped them secure the purchase of Oakleigh. Tom also served on numerous bank boards, the hospital board at Gordon Hospital, and the board of the Red Cross. He was a lifelong member of the Calhoun First United Methodist Church. Tom was an avid golfer and a hugh University of Georgia football fan. He enjoyed eating breakfast with his friends at the Echota Smoke House. He loved the city of Calhoun and thought there was no better place to live. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Louise Fite Bond, one daughter Becky Bond Mathews and her husband William Mathews, two granddaughters, Susan Mathews Rutland and her husband David Rutland, of Calhoun and Helen Bond Mathews of Washington D.C., two great grandchildren Catherine Louise Rutland and William Thomas Rutland also of Calhoun. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 30th 11:00 am at the Calhoun First United Methodist Church. Visitation is to follow in the fellowship hall of the church. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Gordon County Historical Society@ P.O. Box 342, Calhoun, Georgia, 30703.
