Wednesday, August 29, 2007 Mr. Thomas N. “Tom” Curtis age 90 of 125 Peters St, Calhoun, died Wednesday morning August 29th. in Calhoun Health Care following several months of declining health. Tom was born August 26, 1917 and spent his entire life in Calhoun and Gordon County . He was the son of the late W.F. and Bessie Waldrop Curtis. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Polly of 61 years, and two sisters; Gladys Curtis Keys and Jennie Mae Curtis Preston. He was a graduate of Belwood High School. He was a veteran of WWII, having served his country with the Army. He was a member of the Battery H., 214th. Field Artillery. He was sent overseas in early 1942 and did not return until 1945. He saw action in England, France, North Africa, Italy , and Germany. He also was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. After he returned from the war he worked in the family business. Then in 1950 he opened his own business and for many years he operated Tom’s Upholstery Shop and later with his son Cale, Curtis Upholstery Shop. He was a former member of the Lion’s Club, Elks Club, American Legion and VFW. For many years he was a volunteer youth baseball coach with recreation department. He coached not only his children but, also his grandchildren. Tom was a Christian and a long time member of the First Baptist Church. He served on the Deacon Board, Youth Sunday School teacher and for many years sang with the Adult Choir for 50 years. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law; Lynn and C.L. Rutledge, two sons and daughters-in-law; Tommy and June Curtis and Cale and Robin Curtis all of Calhoun, a brother and sister-in-law; John Whitmer and Hazel Curtis of Nashville, Tenn. Grandchildren; Randy Duncan, Curt and JoAnna Duncan, Boone ,Jayne and Sam Curtis, Bryanne and Kevin Parker and Brandon and Christy Curtis. Great-grandchildren; Christina,Katherine , Julia and William Duncan, Brock and Brody Parker and Courtney Winkley. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday August 31st. from the Calhoun First Baptist Church with Dr. Bert Vaughn officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Blackwood Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers serving include Randy and Curt Duncan, Brandon, Boone, Sam, and Larry Curtis and Kevin Parker and they are asked to meet at the funeral home at 9:30 A.M. Friday. Honorary pallbearers will be the Sycamore Sunday School Class and they are asked to meet at the Church at 10:45 A.M. Friday. Reva and Chester Utz and Carolyn Thompson will have charge of the music. On Friday morning the body will be carried to the Church to lie instate from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday.
