Samuel "Sammy" M. Black, Jr. age 69 of Sugar Valley, passed away July 22, 2014 at his residence following a courageous 10 month battle with cancer.
Sam was born on January 23, 1945 in Gordon County to the late Sam Black Sr. and Ruby Bob Walraven Black. He was a member of the Sugar Valley Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Davis Black; one daughter, Kim Foster and her husband Rick; two grandsons, Tucker Foster and Tanner Foster; a brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Sherri Black of Santa Barbara, CA; sister-in-law, Sue and Earnest Wilson; brothers-in laws, Gene and Margie Davis and Travis Davis; nephew and nieces, Scott Williams, Pam Saylors, Gena Layson, DeDe Curry, and Sydney Black also survive.
He was employed in textile for several years. Many of those years were with Astro Dye Works. Many knew him from his family's owned store, Anytime Yogurt where he enjoyed talking with the customers. For the last ten years, he has been known by students simply as “Mr. Sam” at Tolbert elementary School.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 24th from 11-3 at Thomas Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be conducted, following the visitation, on Thursday at 4:00pm from the Sugar Valley Baptist Church Chapel (old church) with the Rev. William Roberts officiating and Mrs. Pat Brock will be in charge of music. Burial will follow in the Sugar Valley Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Scott Williams, Garrett Saylors. Wade Floyd, Bobby Walraven, Freddy Black, Randy McEntrye.
