Ruby Edwards Shivers

Ruby Edwards Shivers Ruby Edwards Shivers, of Oak Grove Road, Calhoun, passed away on September 21, 2008, at the age of 90 years, and 8 days, following several years of declining health. For the past 6 years she had made her home at Gordon Health Care in Calhoun. She was born to the late George Washington and Minnie Mashburn Edwards on September 13, 1918 at Spring Place in Murray County, Ga., and was a graduate of Calhoun High School. She attended North Georgia College in Dahlonega prior to her marriage on December 7, 1940 to Joseph A. Shivers who preceded her in death on September 20, 2007. Mrs. Shivers was a homemaker and in later years, after her sons were grown, worked for more than 25 years with her husband in the operation of an antiques business that they opened in 1970. She became a member of the First Baptist Church of Calhoun on August 31, 1956, where she taught for many years in the Beginner Sunday School class for children and worked with the Sunbeams mission program for children. She was a closeted poet who often put her thoughts into rhyme, primarily for her own enjoyment. Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were brothers Wallace, Howard Jack and George W. Edwards, Jr. and sisters Golda Rutledge, Rosa Lee Barton, and Sally Tribble. One sister and brother-in-law, Johnnie and Rusty Mitchum of Armuchee, three sisters-in-law, Juanita Edwards and Agnes Shivers Henderson of Calhoun, Margaret Ann Offutt Shivers of Kissimmee, Fla., and nieces and nephews also survive. “Burdee” as she was nick-named by a nephew when, as a toddler he couldn’t pronounce “Ruby,” was the mother of two sons and two daughters by marriage: John and his wife, Elizabeth, and Mike and his wife, Janet, of Calhoun. These four children survive along with a granddaughter and grandson by marriage, Sarah Shivers Lewis and Lindsay Lewis, and two great-grandchildren that were so precious to her, Grant and Lillie Lewis of Calhoun. Mrs. Shivers loved nothing more than cooking for her family. Her creamed corn, candied sweet potatoes and chocolate pie, all made from scratch, were favorites that none of her children have ever been able to satisfactorily duplicate. Funeral services will be held from the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Calhoun on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at 2:00 P.M., with interment following along-side her husband in Fain Cemetery. Dr. Bert Vaughn, Mrs. Shivers’ long-time pastor and the Rev. Stephen Edwards, a nephew of whom she was so proud, conducted the service and the graveside rites. Her son, John and her granddaughter, Sarah, delivered special remarks and music was arranged by Barry Bryant, Doug Roebuck, Charles Zacharias, and Catherine Ritch Guess.. The family will receive friends at the Thomas Funeral Home from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday . Pallbearers were Dr. Larry Vest, Sam Harwell, Jeff Ruddell, Harry Harwell,Dennis Alexander and Mike Caldwell. Thomas Funeral Home of Calhoun was in charge of arrangements.
