Ronald Hammond Woods, 73, passed away at home on August 11, 2016, surrounded by his family.
Ron was born on October 2, 1942 in Trion, Georgia, son of the late J.C. “Jake” and Laura Nell Hammond Woods. He was a member of Calhoun First Baptist Church. After graduation from Trion in 1960, Ron attended Georgia Tech and Georgia State University in Atlanta. He then made Calhoun his home for the remainder of his years.
Ron was chairman of the Gordon Hospital Authority from 1977 until 1981; served on the Calhoun City Council from January 1996 until December 2003. He was president of the Calhoun Rotary Club in 1988 and 1989 and Sergeant of Arms from 1995 until 2004. Ron was a member of the Cancer Society from 1971 until 1974, active with the United Way, Youth Baseball and Football and a Cub Scout leader. Ron was owner/President of Burton Carpet and Rugs which he sold to Mohawk Industries in 1992.
Other than his parents, Ron was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Rhonda Woods.
He is survived by his wife, Millie Rann Woods of Calhoun; sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Anna Woods of Newnan, GA, and Chris and Nicole Woods of Charleston, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Greg Bonner of Calhoun; one sister and brother-in-law, Janice Woods Orr and Raymond of Birmingham, AL; sisters-in-law, Bertha Adamson and her husband Gene of Tunnel Hill, GA, and Barbara Herrin of Cartersville, GA; six grandchildren, Brandon and Denio Woods of Newnan, GA, Heath and Shanda Spector of Idaho Falls, ID, Haggen Spector of Denver, CO, Nate Bonner of Calhoun, and Katelynn Woods of Charleston, SC; several nieces nephews and cousins survive; and his special caregiver, Keisha Blackmon and family of Calhoun.
A Memorial Service will be held at Thomas Funeral Home on Saturday, August 13th at 3 PM with Dr. Bert Vaughn officiating. Kenny Herron will have charge of music.
The family will receive friends at Thomas Funeral Home on Saturday from 1 PM until the funeral hour at 3 PM.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association.
