Robert G. Nielsen

Robert G. Nielsen, age 86 of Calhoun, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at Gordon Health Care. Robert was born on December 22, 1928 in Milwaukee, WI to the late Sidney D. and Irma L. Nielsen. Bob was employed with the JC Penney company for 33 years in a position of management, managing stores in Wisconsin, Georgia and Texas. He loved the challenge of motivating his people and bringing them together as a team. After retiring early, Bob and Betty settled in a home in Fairfield Glade, TN working on their game of golf; Bob loved golf so much he even thought it would be nice to have his remains sprinkled on the 16th hole. Later, Bob and Betty sold their TN home and traveled the country for 6 ½ years in their motor home enjoying family, friends and many an adventure. In October of 1994 Bob had a severe stroke, altering their life considerably. For 21 years he has set an incredible example to all of his family in trusting God, maintaining a positive spirit through incredible trials, rarely losing that smile on his face. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sons, Dale and David Nielsen. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Betty Stewart Nielsen of Calhoun; two daughters, Chris Elliotte and her husband Charlie of Tyrone, GA and Pam Sands and her husband Rodney of Orlando, FL; two daughters-in-law, Carol Smallman of Alpharetta and Kathy Nielsen of Calhoun; eleven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday, December 19th at 11 AM from the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with the Reverend Lamar Hand officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10 AM until the funeral hour at 11 AM at Thomas Funeral Home, and also following the service.
