Robert Ansel King, age 83 of Calhoun, passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 in Emory University Hospital following an extended illness.
Robert was born on October 17, 1933 in Floyd County to the late John Allen King, Sr. and Ruth Genevieve Hobgood King. In addition to his parents, Robert was also preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Shirley Harris King on July 29, 2017; brother, John Allen King, Jr; his twin sister, Mary Anne King Moore and her husband, James Moore. Robert graduated from Oostanuala High School, Class of 1951. After high school, Robert attended the University of Georgia where he graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1955. He continued his education at the University of Georgia where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. After graduating college, Robert worked at Oostanaula School as a teacher, principal, bus driver, and custodian. Later, he was owner and operator of King Insurance Agency which he operated with his wife for over 40 years. Robert was a long-time active member of West Union Baptist Church, where he had been a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and song leader. Robert was also a devoted member of the Gideon’s International. He also served in the United States Navy.
Robert was an avid history buff and enjoyed discussing it with anyone at anytime.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Rhonda King of Calhoun; daughter and son-in-law, Candace and Richard Steele, II of New Smyrna Beach, FL; five grandchildren whom he was so proud of, Bryn King Ramos and her husband Joe of Calhoun, Madyson King of Calhoun, Richard “Tripp” D. Steele, III, R. King Steele, and Sailor G. Steele all of New Smyrna Beach, FL; and sister-in-law, Sara Ables King.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday, September 2nd at 12 noon from West Union Baptist Church with Reverend Jerry Brooks officiating. Burial will follow in the West Union Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 1st beginning at 5 PM at Thomas Funeral Home.
