Mrs. Robbie (Bobbie) Starr Mathews, age 79, of Calhoun, passed away on Friday April 10th. Following an extended illness. Bobbie was active in the First United Methodist Church, which was a centerpiece in her life. Bobbie dearly loved her family, her friends, and Calhoun, the community she called home.
A third generation Calhoun native, Bobbie was devote to her community and spearheaded numerous committees and projects for the good of Calhoun and Gordon County. Bobbie was a pioneer in the early development stages of the Downtown Beautification Committee, which is responsible for maintaining an attractive downtown area. She was instrumental in the development of the Roland Hayes Daycare Center, which has evolved into numerous daycare centers within the community. Bobbie also initiated a scholarship fund for area nurses through the Gordon Hospital Foundation Board.
Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents, James Henry and Aurie Will Starr of Calhoun and by her sister, Jeter Starr Horsley of Rome.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Mathews to whom she was married for 58 years. Her son, William Mathews and his wife Becky; her son Jim Mathews and his wife Kathy; and her daughter, Mary Mathews. Four grandchildren, Helen Mathews, Susan Rutland and her husband David, Robert Mathews, and Barton Mathews. Her great granddaughter, Cate Rutland also survives. Other survivors include a beloved brother in law, Bob Horsley, Sr., Starr Smith, Susan Sipf, and Bob Horsley, Jr. and their families. Special friends include Pat Hawkins, Cindy Hawkins, and Angie Stansell.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday April 13th at 2pm from the First United Methodist Church of Calhoun. With Dr. Brian Clark and Rev. Tom Karr officiating. Interment will follow in Fain Cemetery. Pallbearers serving include, Robert Mathews, Barton Mathews, David Rutland, Bob Horsley, Jr., Dick Inman, Jim Lay, Jimmy Smith and Jimmy Silvers.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5 until 8pm.
