Retired SGM James "Jim" Franklin Purkey

October 8, 2010 Retired Army SGM James Franklin "Jim" Purkey, age 74, of Calhoun. Died Thursday evening October 7th at his residence. Jim was born April 2, 1936 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Son of the late J.B. and Anabelle Lytle Purkey. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War serving in the United States Army for 26 years retiring with the rank of Sergeant Major and was a recipient of the Bronze Star. After his retirement Jim owned and operated International Photography in Morrow, Georgia. Survivors include his son, Mike Purkey and his wife Patricia of Calhoun. A brother Bill Purkey and his wife Marcia of Gainesboro, Tn.. Three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Tuesday October 12th at 11am from the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home. With Rev. Ken Weddell officiating. Burial will follow in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton at 1:30pm with full military rites. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5 until 8pm.
