Mr. Porter Black age 82 died peacefully on May 12, 2010 at Morning Pointe Assisted Living in Calhoun. Mr. Black was born in Oakman, Ga. on June 8, 1928 son of the late Paul B. and Leola Holbert Black, was a native and lifelong resident of Gordon County. He enlisted and served as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army for 20 years with several overseas tours of duty which included WWII, the Korean War and Germany. His military decorations include a WWII Victory medal, Army of Occupation Medal- Japan, Good Conduct Medal (5th award), and the National Defense service Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster). After his military retirement, he retired again with 20 years from the Department of Natural Resources State Game and Fish Commission as a game warden in Gordon County. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers; Kinzel, Junior, Haywood and Billy Black and two sisters; Edgie Howell and Dorothy Hamby. Mr. Black was an active member in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church (Ryo). He was a life member of the Kiwanis, served as Vice President for the 9th. District Peace Officers Association, served on the Fairmount City Council and a member of the Retired Enlisted Association. He was an avid gardener, fisherman, a field judge, enjoyed quail hunting, and raising bird dogs. Mr. Black was a devoted and loving son, husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife of 54 years Carol Wilson Black of Fairmount, one son; Steve Black and his wife Denise of Ranger, two daughters: Rita Manning and her husband Randall of Athens, Melba Scoggins and her husband Myron of Rydal, one sister; Betty Jean McBee of Calhoun of Calhoun, four grandchildren; Morgan, April , Mallory and Jesse. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday May 16 at 2:00 P.M. from Pleasant Grove-Ryo, with Rev. Lamar Beason and Harold Owens officiating. Internment with follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers serving include; Butch Brendal, Bruce Kelly, Matt Lacey, Keith Wilson, Chic Tate, Wayne Gilreath, Wayne Walters, Sid Roberts, Pat Baker, and Ellis Owens these gentlemen are asked to meet at Thomas funeral at 12:45 P.M. Sunday May 18. Honorary Pallbearers will be retired and active employees from the State Fish and Game Commission these gentlemen are asked to meet at the church at 1:45 P.M. Sunday on May 18. The family will receive friends at Thomas Funeral Home Saturday from 5 to 8 P.M. Tim Wilson, Wayne and Betty Howell are in charge of the music. In lieu of floers contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Wing at Morning Point or the Gordon County National Guard Relief Fund.
