Phyllis Brenda Wall Purdy

Phyllis Brenda Wall Purdy, age 85 of Calhoun, GA, passed away on Monday, September 19, 2022 at AdventHealth Gordon.

Phyllis was born on June 17, 1937 in Raleigh, NC to Roger I. and Phyllis Stier Wall. She was raised in Raleigh, NC with her three sisters, Linda, Audrey, and Barbara. She graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1955. After high school she graduated St. Mary’s College in 1957. Then she graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a BS in education. She continued her education and earned her Master’s Degree in education at Georgia Southern. She also graduated with a specialist degree in education at West Georgia.

Phyllis married Ron Purdy on August 12, 1961 and raised three children; Hunt, Louise, and Roger. She had two granddaughters, Kirtland Purdy Roach and her husband Dalton and Georgia Pardon.

Phyllis taught school for 38 years in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia at various schools. She coached basketball in South Carolina. She was a charter member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church and was a member of the vestry for multiple terms. She was on the Bishop of Atlanta’s task force for many years.

She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, Phi Beta Phi Honor Fraternity and Alpha Delta Kappa Education Sorority. She was a member of P-16 task force, under Governor Zell Miller, PTA for 36 years, Literacy Council for 30 years,  Prevent Child Abuse for 12 years, Friends of Library for 25 years, Historical Society for 20 years, Women’s Club for 6 years, Calhoun/Gordon County Retired Educators for 25 years, Homemaker of the Year 1970 and Teacher of the Year 1997.

Phyllis enjoyed crocheting, swimming, her granddaughters and the beach.

Phyllis is survived by: her three children, Hunt Purdy and his wife Tracy, Roger W. Purdy and his wife Karen, and Louise Purdy; two granddaughters, Sara Kirtland and her husband Dalton and Georgia Pardon; and three sisters, Linda Isley and her husband Randolph, Audrey Black and her husband James and Barbara Jones and her husband Norm.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 30, 2022 from 5 PM until 7 PM at Thomas Funeral Home.(Business casual attire is appropriate)

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at 2 PM at the Calhoun First United Methodist Church with Reverend Linda Pineo officiating.
