Paul Wood, age 80 of Calhoun, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at his residence. Paul was born on March 14, 1937 in Gordon County, son of the late Gilbert Wood and Minnie Langston Wood. He was a founding member of the Maranatha Baptist Church which was started out of his home in the early 60’s. He remained active in the church and was a member of the Board of Deacons. After retirement from the United States Postal Service he became a bailiff for the Gordon County Superior Court. Paul is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marie Wood; three daughters, Paula Goble and her husband Larry of Calhoun, Wanda Stone and her husband Ray of Calhoun, and Sonya Thompson and her husband George of Dalton; one sister, Gwen Wood of Calhoun, six grandchildren, April Goble, Allison Davis, Trey Goble, Gavin Thompson, Autumn Thompson, and Alaina Thompson. Five great-grandchildren, Riley Goble, Ryder Goble, Charley Davis, Milley Davis, and Whit Goble also survive. Funeral Services will be conducted on Friday April 7th at 11am from the Maranatha Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Crider officiating. Music will be arranged by Gwen Wood and Bill and Janice Richards. Burial will follow in Gordon Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers serving will include, Larry Goble, Trey Goble, Ryder Goble, Ray Stone, Andrew Davis, George Thompson, and Gavin Thompson. Honorary pallbearers are Pat Baker, Newell Akins, Jimmy Gee, Gary Fuller, Don Gravitt, Jackie Clayton and Deacons of Maranatha Baptist Church. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 4 until 7pm at the funeral home.
