Paul J. Whittemore passed away February 3, 2015 at Gordon Healthcare. He was born April 15, 1921 in Gordon County, Georgia, the son of Daniel Z. Whittemore and Bessie Padgett Whittemore. Paul was a longtime resident of Gordon County. He lived in the county his entire life except when on active duty in the Army during WWII. Paul was a Fairmount High School graduate and was trained at Georgia Tech in Atlanta in preparation for deployment as a signal corps soldier in the European Theatre of WWII.
In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his beloved wife Janelle Gillespie Whittemore and his son Paul K. Whittemore. He was preceded in death also by two brothers, Noel Whittemore, Sr. and John Whittemore, Sr., and three sisters, Joella Whittmore Rogers, Edna Whittemore Cochran and Bessie Whittemore Jackson.
Paul is survived by numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
After returning from military service in 1945, Paul chose the insurance business for his career. He owned a State Farm agency for 50 years in Calhoun. He served the community as a professional and was known for honorable conduct of business.
Paul was active in the Calhoun Rotary Club for many years, serving in leadership roles including Chapter President. He was an active member of the Calhoun First Methodist Church and for years sang in the choir.
Services for Paul will be held at Thomas Funeral Home February 5th at 2 PM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12 noon to 2 PM.
Services will be conducted by Rev. Padgett Nelson and Dr. Bob Hoffman with interment in the Chandler Cemetery in Calhoun.
Pall bearers are John Whittemore, Jr., Ron Nelson, Carl Gay, Steve Coffman, Mike Davis, John Johnson, Carl Jackson, Jr. and Kent Chapman.
Members of Rotary Club of Calhoun will serve as honorary pall bearers.
