Michael Lee Powell, age 60 of Calhoun. Was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday January 22nd at the Hutchinson Medical Center in Ft. Oglethorpe. He was born January 18, 1951 in Union City, Tennessee. The son of the late Noel Powell and Mary Rogers Powell. In addition to his parents, his sister Patti Bankston also preceded him in death. Michael was raised in Memphis, Tennessee, but moved to Calhoun, Georgia in 1973. During his life he held many different positions and had many professions. He had worked in construction, sold insurance, worked in several fast food establishments as well as working for the Atlanta newspapers and at a motorcycle shop. He also drove a school bus for Gordon County and had been active with the Fulton County Sheriff's Reserves along with retiring as a deputy from Cobb County Sheriff's Office. Michael was always drawn to excitement and new challenges. He had many profession from sales, to construction, to the newspaper. Most recently he had driven for the Gordon County School System. However his real passion was motorcycles, on his beloved Honda Goldwing, he rode across the country supporting children's charities. Michael had many pursuits outside of work which he loved to do such as being a small plane pilot, hiking, camping, and traveling all over North America especially on his beloved Honda Goldwing motorcycle with his wife, Carol. The time that he spent on his motorcycle inspired him to own a motorcycle accessory business at one time. He continue to love motorcycles even though his disability did not permit him to ride them anymore. Michael was a member of the Belmont Baptist Church and had served as their maintenance man before becoming disabled. In addition to being a member , Past Master, and Past Secretary of Sonora Masonic Lodge #221. he was also a member of the Atlanta Scottish Rite, Yaarab Shrine Temple, and the Echota-Vann Shrine Club. He is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years, Carol McElroy Powell of Calhoun. Two daughters; Gina Revels and her husband Joe of Calhoun and Melody Chapman and her husband Paul of Dunfermline, Scotland. Two grandchildren; Valora Chapman and Zander Chapman of Dunfermline, Scotland. Three brothers; Russell Powell and his wife Phyllis of Crossville, Tennessee, Douglas Powell and his wife Katherine of Memphis, Tennessee, and Joe Salmon of San Francisco, CA. Many other family and friends also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday January 25th at 1pm from the Belmont Baptist Church. With Rev. Jeff Hawkins and Dr. John Allen officiating. Music will be provided by Jim and Treva Sellers. Burial will follow in Fain Cemetery. Sonara Masonic Lodge #221 will conduct a masonic graveside service. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. Pallbearers serving include; Eddie Timms, Chuck Allen, Virgil Miller, Ron Free, Kelley Cohea, and Jonathan Purser. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made in memory of Michael to the American Cancer Society or the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children.
