Mary Jean Poarch Greene

Mary Jean was born on July 3, 1929 in Gordon County, the daughter of the late John Neal Poarch and Maude Montgomery.   Besides her parents, Mary Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Charles Simpson Greene and her sisters, Johnnie Gazaway and Jimmie Robertson. 

Mary Jean spent her entire life in Gordon County.  She attended Oakman Grammar School and later graduated from Fairmount High School in 1946.  She then attended West Georgia College earning a degree in Elementary Education and in 1978 she earned a Masters of Education from Berry College. 

Mary Jean taught in the Gordon County School System for 39 ½ years at Sugar Valley, Oakman Elementary, Belwood and Sonoraville Schools. 

She was a member of the Association of Educators, Gordon County Education Association, Calhoun Gordon County Georgia Retired Educators Association, Beta Tau of Delta Kappa Gamma and the New Echota Methodist Church. 

Mary Jean is survived by her two sons: David Greene and his wife Mary of Lenexa, Kansas, and Neal Greene and his wife Marian of Lawrenceville, Georgia; six Grandchildren: Geoff, Richard, Ben, Katie, Adam and Abby; and eight Great-Grandchildren: Sam, Archer, Lydia, Evelyn, Charles, Thomas, Ethan, and Zoe.  Also surviving are several nephews and her niece, all of Gordon County. 

The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 18, 2022 from 3 PM until 5 PM at Thomas Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Monday, December 19, 2022 at 2 PM from the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Reverend Vincent Moreno officiating. Burial will follow in Fain Cemetery.

Pallbearers serving are: Geoff Greene, Ben Greene, Cameron Bogue, Adam Greene, Sam Greene and Jackie Burns. Richard Greene will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Mary Jean to the New Echota Methodist Church, P.O. Box 71, Calhoun, GA 30703-0071.
