Mary Eleanor Swain All passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2023 at the age of 89 in Marietta, Georgia.
She lived a brilliant life filled with love, curiosity, and gentle energy. Eleanor exhibited generosity of time and spirit, loyalty to family and friends, and a love of travel and exploration. Born on July 2, 1934 in Decatur, Georgia, Eleanor was the older of two daughters of Frederick Garlington Swain and Mary Hall Swain. Eleanor graduated with honors from Marietta High School and then from Agnes Scott College, where she was editor of the school newspaper her senior year. While attending Agnes Scott, Eleanor traveled to Europe and attended the centennial meeting of the YMCA in Paris, France where she met her future husband, William (Bill) H. All, III, who was also attending the YMCA meeting as a representative from Georgia Tech in Atlanta. After both graduated from college, they were married in 1956 and moved to Pensacola, FL where Eleanor taught high school while Bill was in flight training with the US Navy. From there, they moved with the Navy to Hutchinson, KS, Coronado, CA, Barbers Point, Hawaii, Kodiak, Alaska and back to Hawaii where Eleanor was the consummate military wife and mother of their two children, William H. All IV and Mary Ellen All. After Bill completed active duty with the Navy, the family moved back to Marietta, GA where Eleanor again taught school, sold real estate and office supplies, and obtained her Master of Education. She spent the next forty years in Marietta, GA where she and Bill made many friends and lived an active social life, with brief sojourns in Memphis, TN and Hingham, MA due to Bill’s jobs. Eleanor was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church for 60+ years. Eleanor and Bill celebrated 66 years of marriage before her death.
Eleanor is survived by her husband, Bill, their two children, William (Hamp) All of Port Townsend, WA and Ellen All McNeel (Jim) of Marietta, GA as well as five grandchildren, Jennifer Deal (Ryan), Mary Jane Lizzio (Sal), Maile Allzer (Kevin), Christine England (Josh), and Ryland Weber (Kit) and four great-grandchildren, Lucca and Ellis Lizzio and Maggie and Macy England.
