Martha Elizabeth Goswick (Granny) Hopper, age 90 formerly of Plainville, died Saturday morning June 16th at Morning Point.
Martha was born on May 24, 1922 in Gordon County, daughter of the late Rupert (James) Goswick and Vada Scott Goswick. She had spent most of her life in Plainville and was a member of the Unity Baptist Church. She was a charter member of the Gordon Hospital Pink Ladies now the Gordon Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary, a past-board member of the American Red Cross, lifetime member of the Gordon County Historical Society, past-director of the Unity Baptist Church Girls Auxiliary and the WMU, one of the founding members of the Plainville Recreation Department, and was active in the PTA in past years.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Claude Hopper, granddaughter; Kristie Hopper Thomas, grandson; Thomas (Tommy) Hopper, three brothers; R.J. Goswick, Tillman Goswick, and Maurice Goswick, one sister; Era Goswick Dodd, daughter in law; Susan McClinton Hopper, son in law; Douglas Hunt.
Survivors include six children; Mable Hunt, Richard (Dickie) Hopper and his wife Jane, Vivian Carden, Bryant Hopper and his wife Wilma, Leslie Hopper, Mitzi Lindsey and her husband Benjamin, one sister in law; Myra Floyd, twelve grandchildren, Ramona Carver, Richard McEntyre, Sandy Lynch, Britt Carden, Brice Carden, Dena Boswell, Michelle Hughes, Jennifer Stroup, Jason Hopper, Eric Hopper, Justin Lindsey, and Aaron Lindsey, twenty-two, great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild along with a number of nieces and nephews also surviving.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday June 18th at 1pm from the Unity Baptist Church with Rev. James “Woody” Woodfin officiating. Burial will follow in the Scott Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and the staff of Morning Point Assisted Living will serve as honorary escorts.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 until 9pm and on Monday morning until 11:30am at which time Granny will be taken to the church to lie in state from 12 noon until the funeral hour.
