Margaret Julia Wood, age 82, formerly of Sandersville, Georgia died in Calhoun Friday, September 22, 2017. Julia was born, March 27, 1935 in Sandersville, the daughter of Mildred Julia English and Frank Cooley Wood.
She was a graduate of Sandersville High School and Georgia State College for Women, now Georgia College and State University. She retired after a long career as an elementary school teacher in the Washington County Schools. She was an active member of the Sandersville United Methodist Church, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Washington County Historical Society, and the Twentieth Century Club.
She was known by friends and family as continuing the English and Wood family traditions of great story telling, often displaying her delightful wit in her tales. She displayed remarkable determination even in later years learning to drive a car after she retired from teaching, and despite bouts of poor health, traveling frequently on trips in the U.S. and Canada. Her fondness for children was well known to friends and family thanks to her small remembrances to them on holidays and special occasions. Miss Wood spent her entire life in Sandersville before moving to Morning Point Assisted Living in Calhoun to be closer to her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Frank Wood and her brother-in-law Robert E. O’Connor. Survivors include her sister, Peggy Wood O’Connor of Calhoun; niece Shelley O’Connor Medders and her spouse Bret Medders of Calhoun, nephew, Michael K. O’Connor and his spouse Andreas Loaiza of Atlanta;great nephew, Austin Medders and his spouse Karli and their son, Austin Case Medders of Calhoun; great niece, Tess Cooley Medders of Calhoun; and a large number of devoted cousins and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at 2 PM from the Sandersville United Methodist Church Chapel with Dr. Stan Littlefield officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately after the Memorial Service.
