Malcolm Richard Henderson

Dr. Malcolm Richard Henderson, 88, a resident of 2102 Summit Parkway, Prattville, Al., and formerly a resident of Columbus, Ga. for 38 years, was called home by the Lord on Friday, August 16 from complications of dementia. Born August 26, 1924, in Sweetwater, TN, to the late Rev. G.B. and Mabel Henderson, he grew up in Tennessee, and later in Harlem, Ga. Malcolm received his B.S. degree from the University of Georgia; M.S. degree from the University of Tennessee; and his Ph.D. from the University of Alabama. He taught Economics, Investments, and Accounting at nine colleges and universities in the Southeast until his retirement in 1992 at Columbus State University, Columbus, GA. He met the love of his life, Mina Jo Robertson, in Atlanta, GA in 1946. They were married two months later by Malcolm's father on August 24, 1946. They treasured almost 67 wonderful years together. Malcolm loved animals, reading, and traveling inside and outside of the US. In 1960 he and his family took a two-month vacation with a 13-foot travel trailer, seeing the Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, the Painted Desert, the still-new Disneyland, and other points of interest. He also loved peanut butter cookies, spaghetti, and cornbread (as only Jo could make it). He became involved in prison ministries and mission work through his church for many years. Malcolm was preceded in death two months ago by his loving wife, Mina Jo Henderson, and in 1997, by his sister, Francis Henderson Austin. Leaving to cherish his loving memory are daughter Beverly Thompson (James) of Millbrook, AL; granddaughter Melissa Masters (Charles) of Montgomery, AL; grandson Tony Thompson of Prattville, AL; and great-granddaughter Veronica Masters of Montgomery, AL. Services will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at 2:00 PM from Ridout's Funeral Home, 347 East Main Street, Prattville, AL. A private burial will follow on Wednesday in Chandler Cemetery.
