Louis Paul Owens

Louis Paul Owens III "Paul", age 46, passed away Monday, June 15, 2015, as a result of a heart attack. He was born July 27, 1968, in Calhoun, Georgia to Joanne and L.P. Owens. Paul was a graduate of Calhoun High School, class of 1986, where he was actively involved in the debate, drama, choir, and band programs. Paul received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Studies from Rhodes College in 1990. He was a member of Sigma Iota Rho Honor Society, Mortar Board Honor Society, and received the Abe Fortas Award for excellence in Legal Studies. He was a member of the nationally ranked Rhodes College Mock Trial Team, and named Outstanding Lawyer. He was also a member of Rhodes College Singers and enjoyed taking part in their tour of Europe. Paul received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Georgia School of Law and was on the Editorial Board of the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law. After law school, Paul represented low-income clients at the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and then joined the practice of Weissman, Nowack, Curry & Wilco. For the past 8 years, Paul practiced at Jones and Walden, litigating cases in state and federal courts in the areas of real estate and insurance defense. He was a member of the American Bar Association, Stonewall Bar Association, Georgia Equality, and a supporter of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society. Paul was a devoted member of North Decatur Presbyterian Church where he served many years as an Elder and choir member. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his partner, Eddie Verdin; his sisters, Julie Owens Leggett and Anna Owens Dunston. His brother-in-laws, John Leggett and Chad Dunston; five nieces, Kate, Lucy and Caroline Leggett, Fields and Greer Dunston, and one nephew, Owen Dunston. The family will receive visitors at Thomas Funeral Home in Calhoun, GA on June 19th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on June 20th at North Decatur Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Lewicki officiating. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on June 21st at First United Methodist Church, Calhoun, GA with the Rev. Victor Floyd officiating.
