Lois Barton West

Lois Barton West, age 91 of the Sonoraville Community, passed away Tuesday morning, September 15th at her residence. Lois was born April 9, 1924 in Gordon County, daughter of the late Olin Reece Barton and Ruby Kathleen Ellis Barton. She was a member of the Farmville United Methodist Church. After graduating from Sonoraville High School and Berry College she taught in the Gordon County School System at Sonoraville, Belwood, and Fairmount. She loved teaching but her life was that of “The Farmer’s Wife”. She authored for several years, the weekly newspaper article, “The Farmer’s Wife’ in the Calhoun News Dispatch. Lois was an active member of the Farm Bureau and served on the State Women’s Committee. She was also active for many years with the Sonora #484 Order of the Eastern Star. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Max and Ellis Barton and one great-great-grandchild, Rhylie Pierce. Survivors include her husband, Henry West; her son, Terry West and his wife Joy; three daughters, Rita Crook, Neva Adams and her husband David, and Nelda Heramb and her husband David; seven grandchildren, Brian Crook, Heath and Tonya Lambert, Angie Stanley, Jenna West, Alyssa West, Owen West, Amber Hensley; five great-grandchildren, Brianna Crook, Hunter Crook, Mason Crook, Daxton Shoemaker, and Darien Hensley; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday September 17th at 2pm from the Farmville United Methodist Church with Rev. Guy Kent and Rev. Larry Hibberts officiating. Music will be arranged by Michael Johnson and Pat Bradford. Burial will follow in Gaines Cemetery with Sonora #484 Order of the Eastern Star in charge of graveside rites. Pallbearers serving include, Brian Crook, Heath Lambert, Owen West, Hunter Crook, Roby Murray, Gene West, Jimmy Bradford and Larry Jones. The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 4 until 9pm at the funeral home. Lois will be taken to the church to lie in state from 1pm until the funeral hour.
