Lawrence Neal Barton, Senior, age 88 of the Sonoraville community passed away Thursday, May 12 at Morning Pointe of Calhoun.
Lawrence was born in Gordon County, November 2, 1922 a son of the late Ernest Neal Barton and Lillie Strickland Barton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Blankenship Barton June 3, 2010 and a brother, John Troy Barton April 16, 1996. He was a Gordon County native but had lived in Atlanta from 1948 until 1983. He was a member of the Sonoraville Baptist Church, a member of the Adult IV Sunday School Class, the Prime Timers, a Sunday School Teacher; a Deacon and Chairman of the Finance Committee. He and his wife, Geneva, had formerly attended the Brown's Mill Baptist Park Baptist Church in Atlanta. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Lawrence was an alumnus of Sonoraville High School; West Georgia College, and the University of Georgia earning a Bachelor of Business Administration. He was employed by Ford Motor Company for many years and retired in 1983 as the Supervisor of Operations/Accounting. He was a veteran of World War II, US Army.
Lawrence is survived by three sons, Neal Barton and his wife, Bobbie Jo of Lilburn, Steve Barton of Conyers, John Barton and his wife Sandy of the Sonoraville Community; grandchildren, Laura Martin and her husband Brad, Jeff Barton and his wife Caitlin, Rachel Barton, Sarah Durden and her husband Charlie, and John Robert Barton, Jr.; great grandchildren, Zach Martin, Chandler Martin, and Brooks Barton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Monday, May 16 at the Sonoraville Baptist Church with the Reverend Steve Skates and Dr. Clarence Drummond officiating. Ronnie Hammontree will have charge of music and burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers are John Troy Barton Jr. Jimmy Barton, Jeff Barton, John Robert Barton Jr. Brad Martin, Charlie Durden, and Landon Booker. They are asked to meet at the church at 9:45 AM Monday.
Honorary pallbearers are Bobby Draper, caregiver, the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, and the Deacons of Sonoraville Baptist Church.
The body of Mr. Barton will lie in state from 10:00 until 11:00 AM Monday at the church preceding the service, and the family will receive friends from 2:00 until 8:00 PM, Sunday at the funeral home.
