Kenneth Ray Proctor, age 71 of Calhoun, passed away on July 20, 2014 at his residence after a year of declining health.
Kenneth was born on July 27, 1942 in Wilson County, NC. He was the son of the late Preston Proctor and May Bell Proctor. Ken received his Bachelor’s Degree from East Carolina University and a Master’s Degree in English from the University of South Carolina. He taught at Chowan College before returning to graduate school at USC. He came to Calhoun in 1975 and taught English at Calhoun High School until his retirement. After retirement, he traveled extensively both in the United States and abroad until he became ill in 2013. Ken was active in a number of Calhoun organizations, including the Harris Art Center, the Calhoun-Gordon County Friends of the Library and the Gordon County Retired Educators Association. He also served on the Citizens’ Review Panel for the Gordon County Juvenile Court. His interest in the theater was evident by his involvement with the drama program at Calhoun High School, where he helped with set building and drove the bus for Thespian activities, even after retirement. He also acted in several Calhoun Little Theater productions.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Goldie Glover.
He is survived by a nephew, Mark Shadding and his son Ryan; a niece, Darlene Shadding and her family, Anna and Corey Strickland; and his Calhoun “family” of many friends and honorary nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Thomas Funeral Home on Saturday, July 26th from 3:00pm until 6:00pm, with a brief informal time of sharing memories at 4:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, Ken had requested donations be made to the Harris Art Center or the Calhoun-Gordon County Library.
