Thomas Funeral Home makes this courtesy announcement on behalf of the family of Julie Richards Smith.
We remember and celebrate the life of Julie Richards Smith, who went to be with Jesus on October 1, 2024. Born to Dr. Charles K. and Elizabeth Richards on April 30, 1950, in Chattanooga, TN and raised in Calhoun, GA Julie grew into a compassionate and humble woman who made a profound impact on all who were fortunate enough to know her. She was an adventurous spirit, always seeking new experiences and travel destinations. Her empathetic nature made her a beacon of comfort and support for many, and she was a living testament to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Julie resided in Cumming, Georgia after living for many years in Marietta. She was a devoted wife to her loving husband, Marvin Smith. Together, they built a warm and welcoming home filled with love, laughter and friends. For over 30 years, Julie worked as a school counselor and administrator, serving the communities of Augusta Prep, The Lovett School and Mount Bethel Christian Academy. Her colleagues knew her to be selfless and stalwart, often being the glue holding the team together. Her career was a reflection of her genuine concern for others, a trait that truly defined her. Julie lived out her faith, serving as part of the congregations of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church in Dahlonega and previously at Mount Bethel in Marietta. A special ministry to Julie was the Stephen Ministry, where she participated in and led in the training of lay congregation members to provide one-to-one care to those experiencing a difficult time in life. As 1 Peter 4:10 shares, "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others," Julie lived this verse wholeheartedly. Outside of her professional life, Julie had many interests. She was a dedicated runner, participating in many Peachtree Road Races and Strong Legs Runs, and she even had the honor of being a 1996 Olympic Torch Bearer. Julie and Marvin were members of the Voices of North Georgia choral group. Throughout her life, Julie loved singing in both small and large group settings. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel extensively, both stateside and overseas. She had a knack for finding her version of Clark's Travel Deals and then convincing friends and family to join her. Being a grandmother was one of Julie's greatest joys. She leaves behind a legacy of love to her sons, Carlton (Jeneane) Guthrie and Charles (Mary Benton) Guthrie; bonus children, Ron (Michelle) Smith, and Heather (Christopher) Duffy; Brother, Bill Richards; Sister, Martie Richards; grandchildren, Juliet, Nadia, Camille, Jack, Charlie, Louise, Brandon, Kelly and Jordan. Julie was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Betsy Richards; brother, Kenneth Richards; and daughter, Katherine Guthrie who undoubtedly greeted her with a huge hug as she entered heaven. A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 13th at 2:00 PM in the Chapel at McDonald and Son funeral home in Cumming, Georgia. A time of fellowship will follow in the reception hall. Julie's love for children and appreciation for Katherine's caregivers leads the family to encourage that memorial gifts be made to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Memorial gifts can be made online at choa.org/tribute or mailed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation, 1575 NE Expressway, Atlanta, Georgia 30329. Alternatively, we encourage donations be made to The Parkinson’s Foundation at Parkinson.org to the further the research for a cure. We invite everyone who knew and loved Julie to share their memories and upload photos to her memorial page.
