Joy C. Powell

Joy C. Powell, age 75 of Calhoun, passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2012 in Wood Dale Health Care Center in Dalton. Joy was born on April 19, 1937 in Whitfield County. She was the daughter of the late Thurman Foster Chitwood and Martha Nance Chitwood. Joy was a member of the Resaca Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Belmont “Dick” Powell. Survivors include: two sons: Monty Powell and his wife Anna of Nashville, TN and Eben Powell of Murfreesboro, TN; two sisters: Nita Smith of Calhoun and Mescal Medders of Calhoun; two granddaughters: Suzannah and Rebekah also survive. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00pm on Wednesday, October 3rd from the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with the Pastor Frank Mills and Jule Medders officiating. Burial will follow in Fain Cemetery. Pallbearers serving include: Jeff Smith, Jule Medders, Bret Medders, Danny Tennant, Hugh Galyean and Adrian Galyean. The family will receive friends from 5 – 8pm on Tuesday, October 2nd at the funeral home. Joy was a passionate advocate for the Alzheimer’s Association, spending the last years of her life raising money for the organization.
