Mr. Joe Shivers, age 89 of Calhoun. Died Thursday September 20th at 2:40AM in the Redmond Regional Hospital.
Joe was born in Washington, D.C. on March 23, 1918. Son of the late Dr. Charles Cleveland and Flora Martin Shivers. He was retired from the United States Postal Service after more than 20 years of service and later became a antique furniture dealer. Mr. Shivers was a veteran of the Army Air Corps serving during WWII. He has been a member of the Calhoun First Baptist Church since 1932 as well as the Sycamore Bible Class where he had served as secretary.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruby Edwards Shivers. Two sons, Mike Shivers and his wife Janet and John Shivers and his wife Elizabeth. One sister, Agnes Shivers Henderson. One granddaughter, Sarah Shivers Lewis and her husband Lindsay. Two great-grandchildren, Grant and Lillie Lewis all of Calhoun. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday September 22nd at 11AM from the Calhoun First Baptist Church. With Dr. Bert Vaughn officiating . Burial will follow in Fain Cemetery. Music will be provided by Doug Roebuck, Kathryn Guess, Carolyn Thompson, Chester and Reva Utz.
Pallbearers serving include Dennis Alexander, Marion Broome, Jerry Nichols, Larry Vest, Harry and Sam Harwell. The Sycamore Bible Class will serve as honorary escorts.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5 until 8 P.M., and on Saturday morning until 9:30 at which time Joe will be taken to the church to lie in state from 10AM until the funeral hour.
The family has requested that in addition to flowers memorial contribution may be made to the Calhoun First Baptist Church Pew Fund % of the church.
