Thursday, June 18, 2009 Mrs. Johnnie Mae Gazaway, age 89, of the Plainville Community. Died Thursday June 18th in Gordon Hospital. Following an extended illness. Mrs. Gazaway was born in Gordon County July 8, 1919. Daughter of the late John Neal and Maude Montgomery Poarch. She had received her undergraduate degree from Shorter College and her sixth year certificate in Educational Supervision from the University of Georgia. Mrs. Gazaway held many positions with the Calhoun City and Gordon County School Systems including classroom teaching, curriculum director as well as assistant superintendent. She also served one term on the Gordon County School Broad. After her retirement from the educational system she attended Floyd College were she received her nursing degree and subsequently opened an assisted living facility for several years. She was a member of the Plainville Methodist Church and was active in many organizations including being a charter member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, the Georgia Retired Teacher Association, and Friends of the Library. Her husband, Aubrey Miller Gazaway preceded her in death. Survivors include her son, John Gazaway and her daughter, Judi Gazaway both of Plainville. Two sisters, Jimmie Robertson and her husband Bill, and Mary Jean Greene and her husband Charles all of Calhoun. Grandchildren, Mark Gazaway of Savannah and Jeff Gazaway and his wife Scarlett of Plainville. Great grandchildren, Kati and Aubri Gazaway both of Plainville. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday June 20th at 11am from the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home. With Rev. Bobby Stephens officiating. Burial will follow in Fain Cemetery. Pallbearers will include, Dene Land, James Franklin, Edmond Holland, David Greene, Neal Greene, Matthew Robertson, Mike Ayers, and Randy Reese. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 until 9pm.
