John W. Russell

John W. Russell, Jr., age 90 of Calhoun, passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at Gordon Hospital. John was born on January 11, 1925 in Columbia, TN to the late John William Russell, Sr. and Eunice Mae Schell Russell. He was the oldest living member of South Calhoun Baptist Church. He formerly resided in Anniston, AL, Pell City, AL and Shelbyville, TN, later moving to Calhoun where he spent the rest of his adult life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maeleene Posey Russell; brother, Harry Frank Russell, Sr.; and granddaughter, Kimberly Diane Grider. He is survived by his son, John W. Russell, III (Billy) and his wife Nenita of Rockwall, TX; two daughters, Janice Hunt and her husband Rev. Michael, and Karen Grider and her husband Larry all of Calhoun; five grandchildren, Rev. Jamey and Leigh-Anne Hunt, Rev. Wesley and Heather Hunt, Seth and Miranda Hunt, Bethany and Chris Barnes, and Heather and Tommy Gates; and four great-grandchildren, Madison Hunt, Noah Hunt, Cooper Hunt, and Julia Hunt. The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors of Gordon Hospital and Gordon Home Care for the care that they gave John. Funeral Services will be conducted on Sunday, December 20th at 2 PM from South Calhoun Baptist Church with Reverend Michael Hunt, Reverend Jamey Hunt, Reverend Wesley Hunt, Reverend Gary Bowman and Reverend Walter Hare officiating. Interment will follow in Fain Cemetery with Sam Thomas, Bobby Dodd, Harry Russell, Bill Loveless, Bobbie Reeves, Ronnie Reeves, Tommy Reeves, and Tommy Gates serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class and the staff of Morning Pointe Assisted Living. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 4 until 7 PM at Thomas Funeral Home. Mr. Russell will lie in state from 1 - 2 PM on Sunday at South Calhoun Baptist Church proceeding the funeral.
