John A. King

John A. King Jr. (July 30, 1929 - June 18, 2011) Mr. John A. King, Jr. age 81 of Calhoun died at 11:50 AM Saturday, June 18 in Redmond Regional Medical Center following several weeks of illness. John was born, July 30, 1929 in Floyd County, son of the late John A. King, Sr. and Ruth Hobgood King. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Anne King Moore. John owned and operated Meadowbrook Dairy, a local milk processing company and J.A. King Dairy, a commercial dairy farm. He was one of the originators of Georgia Bank and Trust where he served as a Director until his retirement in 2001. Earlier in his career John was a public school teacher at Resaca and Oostanaula High Schools, a member of the U.S. Army Reserves, and the Manager of the Farmer's Mutual Exchange in Calhoun. John has served his community as President of the Gordon County Chamber of Commerce, President of the Calhoun Rotary Club, and member of the Voluntary Action Center Board of Directors. He was also a lifetime member of West Union Baptist Church, Sunday school teacher, and Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was an alumnus of Oostanaula High School and West Georgia College. John was a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Oothcalooga Masonic Lodge #154. John is survived by his wife, Sara King of Calhoun; one son John A. King III and his wife, Kimberly of Dumfries, Virginia; one brother, Robert A. King and his wife, Shirl of Calhoun; two granddaughters, Katie King and Kristen King of Dumfries, Virginia. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 21 at West Union Baptist Church with the Reverend Jerry Brooks and Jim Franklin officiating. Internment will follow in the church cemetery with Dr. Bert Vaughn conducting graveside rites. The body of Mr. King will lie in state from 10:00 until 11:00 AM Tuesday preceding the service, and the King family will also receive friends from 5:30 until 8:30 PM Monday at the funeral home. Pallbearers are Philip Beamer, Charles Gaynes, Jim Nesbitt, K.M. Miller, Milton Stewart, and Kelly Hobgood. They are asked to meet at the church at 9:20 AM Tuesday. The family requests that memorial contributions in lieu of flowers be provided to the West Union Cemetery Fund, 683 West Union Road NE, Calhoun, Georgia 30701-6924.
