Thursday, August 30, 2007 Mr. John V. “Jack” Cole Jr., age 85 of Shenendoah Drive, Calhoun, died Wednesday August 29th. at his residence. Jack was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on Feb. 26, 1922 son of the late John V. Cole Sr. and Bertha Mae Pratt Cole. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife Viola Cole. He was a member of the Calhoun First Baptist Church, was retired from Bell-Atlantic/ Verison Telephone Co.where he was proud to be called, The Telephone Man. He was an avid Ham Radio Enthusiast and was one of the organizers of the Vienna Wireless Society. He was an ordained deacon. Jack served in WWII with the U.S. Navy and was the Radioman who received the radio transmission that President Roosevelt had declared War on Japan, had to type the message and deliver to his commanding officers and subsequently was involved in 5 invasions. Jack was on the USS Taska H. Bliss when it was sunk by a Japanese torpedo and was picked up by a Dutch Freighter. Survivors include his wife Frances L. Cole of Calhoun, two sons; Glenn A. Cole of Manassas, Va, and Paul L. Cole and his wife Debbie of Fredricksburg, Va., nine grandchildren; Daniel, Wendy, Melissa, Michael, Kristyne, Pearl, Justin, Lance, and Jason Cole. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday September 1st. from the Chapel of the Thomas Funeral Home with Dr. Bert Vaughn officiating. Interment will follow in the West View Cemetery in Atlanta at 2:00 P.M. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Friday evening. The family requests that in lieu of flowers contrubutions be made to the First Baptist Church or the Alzheimers Foundation.
