James "Jimmy" Lamar Silvers

Mr. James "Jimmy” Silvers, of Calhoun, Georgia, well known businessman and civic leader, died on April 2, 2023. He was 85 years old.

 

Mr. Silvers was born to Melvin and Willie Mae Fortner Silvers on February 22, 1938, in Calhoun. He had two siblings, Jeanette Silvers Clodfelter and Barbara Silvers Minter.

 

He was a lifelong resident of Calhoun, attending Calhoun High School where he enjoyed playing several sports. He was particularly proud to have played on the 1952 State Championship Football Team. He attended Georgia State College graduated from Jacksonville State University in 1963 and served in the Airforce National Guard.

 

In 1964, Mr. Silvers married Jane Hosmer Silvers, and together they had four daughters. The family attended the First Baptist Church in Calhoun and enjoyed spending time together in the community. He served as a deacon, taught Royal Ambassadors (RAs), Sunday School, and was a member of the Faithseekers Class.

 

In 1969, he became affiliated with Starr-Mathews in Calhoun until his retirement in 2007. He thought Calhoun was the greatest place to live and loved growing up here. He loved playing golf with his friends and working in his yard.

 

Mr. Silvers served his community as a member of the Rotary Club, served as President of the Gordon County Cancer Society, was President of the Quarterback Club, was a member of the Gordon County Chamber of Commerce, was a member of the Calhoun-Gordon County Development Authority, and served on the Calhoun School Board.

 

Survivors of Mr. Silvers include: his wife Jane Hosmer Silvers, their four daughters: Allison (Duane) Plummer, Kelli (Joey) Walraven, Robin (Troy) Plott, and Amanda (Cory) Graydon; nine grandchildren: Kylie Plummer, Barrin Plummer, Nathan Walraven, Molly Kate Plott, Jonah Plott, Isabelle Plott, Collins Plott, Miller Graydon, and Mallory Graydon; and several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends at Thomas Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, from 5pm - 8pm. The funeral for Mr. Silvers will be conducted Wednesday, April 5 at 3pm from the Calhoun First Baptist Church. Mr. Silvers will lie in state from 2pm -3pm. Dr. Bert Vaughn will officiate, and Lance Cole will provide the music. Burial will follow in Chandler Cemetery.

 

Pallbearers for the funeral service include Jonah Plott, Nathan Walraven, Barrin Plummer, Miller Graydon, Jimmy Mathews, Larry Cochran, Jimmy Prater, and Jerry Carroll.

 

In lieu flowers the family has kindly requested that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America @ 322 8th Avenue, 16th Floor, New York, NY, 10001.

Mr. Silvers will lie in state from 2pm -3pm. Dr. Bert Vaughn will officiate, and Lance Cole will provide the music. Mr. Silvers will be buried following the funeral at Chandler Cemetery.
