Tuesday, January 27, 2009 Mr. James H. McCollum, age 89 of the Sugar Valley Community, died Monday January 26, 2009 at the residence following an extended illness. James was born in Gordon county on April 15, 1919 son of the late William H. and Edna E. Fuller McCollum and spent the earlier part of his life here. He moved back to Gordon county in 1992 and resided here until his death. He was a member of the Hill City Baptist Church and was retired from the U.S. Military after 20 years serving with the U.S. Army in WWII and Korea and was stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was also retired from Bankhead Int. as a Machinist.. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Willola Deck McCollum, one brother; Carl McCollum and three sisters; Esther E. Shaw, Annie E. Nation and Clara Morgan. Survivors include one son Michael McCollum and his wife Angela of Acworth, Ga. , and one sister; Mildred Robison of Chatsworth. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday January 28th. from the Hill City Baptist Church with Rev. Dewayne White and Shawn Nations officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery with Full Military Rites accorded by American Legion 112 of Dalton. Pallbearers are nephews and include, Jimmy , David and Gerald Shaw, Greg and Danny Serritt and David Nations and they are asked to meet at the Church at 12:45 P.M. Wednesday. On Wednesday the body will be carried to the Church to lie instate from 1:00 until the funeral hour. The family will receive friends at the Thomas Funeral Home today from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M.
