Monday, June 22, 2009 Mr. Howell West, age 85 of the Plainview community passed away Monday morning June 22nd at his residence. Howell was born in Gordon County on Feb. 25, 1924 son of the late Clark Howell and Nellie Kate Jones West. Howell was a well-known farmer and member of the Board of Directors of the Gordon County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Sonoraville Baptist Church were he had served on the Board of Deacons. Howell was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Army and was a member of the Sonora Masonic Lodge #221 F&AM and the Sonora Order of the Eastern Star #484 for more than 50 years. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers; James, Bill and Max West as well as one sister; Sara Underwood. Survivors include his wife of over 62 years, Dot J. West. Two sons; Dwight West and his wife Diane and David West and his wife Marsha. One brother; Ralph West all of the Plainview community. One sister; Dixie Godfrey of Calhoun. Eight grandchildren; Jason West and his Becky, Todd West and his wife April, Angela Martin and her husband Adam, Chris West, Amanda West, Kimberly West, Lee Ann McDougle, Marvin McDougle and his wife Shayna. Eleven great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday June 24th at 11am at the Sonoraville Baptist Church. With Rev. Steve Skates and Rev. Aaron Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Chandler Cemetery with Rev. Jether Cochran in charge of graveside rites. The United States Army will accord military honors. Marcia West, Mike Johnson and Ronnie Hammontree will arrange music. Pallbearers serving include; Jason West, Todd West, Adam Martin, Marvin McDougle, Douglas and Larry Dempsey. Honorary Escorts will include; the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, The Deacon of Sonoraville Baptist Church, Frosty Dutton, Donald and Terry Dempsey. The family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Sonoraville Baptist Church or Healthfield Hospice of Marietta. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5 until 9pm at the funeral home.
