Friday, September 11, 2009 Colonel Herman J. Miller, Jr., U.S. Army retired, age 80 of Fayetteville and formerly of Calhoun died September 9 in Fayetteville. H.J. was born in Calhoun, November 28, 1928, the son of the late Herman J. Miller and Janie Rowlain Miller. A son, James, also preceded him in death. After graduating from North Georgia College, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the US Army. After a teaching public school briefly, he began his 31-year career as an Army officer. He was a Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. After retirement from the Army, he became a consultant with a company in Washington DC. Later he returned to Georgia as a tax agent with the IRS and the Georgia Department of Revenue. He was appointed assistant director of the Georgia Motor Vehicle Division in 1985 and served in that position until retirement in 1993. He was commander of the American Post 105, a member of the Lions Club, a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fayetteville. H.J. is survived by his wife, Thomasina Smith Miller; two daughters, Susan and Doug Adams of Sudbury, Massachusetts, Kathleen and Bill Orr of Saint Charles, Illinois; a son Charles Miller of Fayetteville; 5 granddaughters, 2 grandsons, one great grandson, one sister, Juanita Miller Fox of Calhoun; sister in law, Jackie Pope of Dalton; three nieces and five nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM, Saturday at the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church with Reverend Mark Westmoreland officiating. A graveside committal service will be at 4:00 PM, Saturday in Fain Cemetery of Calhoun with Dr. Bert Vaughn officiating. The family will receive friends at Carl J. Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville from 5:00 until 7:00 PM, Friday. Thomas Funeral Home will assist with local arrangements.
