Henry Jo (Hank) Dobson

Calhoun, GA

Henry Jo (“Hank”) Dobson, Jr., passed away on July 7, 2024 at Gordon Health Care. 

Hank was born on September 30, 1946, in Calhoun and spent nearly all his adult life there. A graduate of Calhoun High School, Hank always enjoyed frequent gatherings with his classmates. After high school, he attended Jacksonville State University where he was a proud member of the Marching Southerners band. Hank earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Jacksonville State. After graduation, he worked one year in Calhoun County, Alabama, before returning home to Calhoun where he spent the rest of his career in Gordon County Schools. He became the first band director for Gordon Central High School. Even after Hank enjoyed driving students to numerous sporting events and field trips and was a loyal Gordon Central Warrior for the remainder of his life.

Hank was married to his wife Dianne for 56 years, and together they shared a great love of music and the arts. The couple was instrumental in the establishment of the Harris Arts Center. Hank served on the board of directors of Gordon County Habitat for Humanity and as a deacon at First Baptist Church Rome. He dearly loved his church and its ministries.

Hank was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Jo Dobson, Sr., Arline Bowen Dobson, and a brother, Arnold Dobson. He is survived by his wife Dianne and one son, Robert Parker Dobson (Teresa). Also surviving are his two grandchildren Kayla and Robert (Kenisha) Dobson and his great-grandchildren Brynleigh Bennefield and Ryleigh Dobson, all of whom were the light of his life. Also surviving are his sister Kathi (Alex) Drake and his brother Randy Dobson as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, July 17, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Rome with the Rev. David Brooks and Dr. Bert Vaughn officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.
