Helen Carter, 102, Smyrna died Tuesday night, October 1 at Delmar Gardens. She was born June 16, 1911 in Sugar Valley, Ga. on Mountain Loop Road daughter of the late John Carter and Josie Ballew Carter. When Helen was 14, her father bought a house in NW Atlanta and moved the family, furniture and a cow South, Helen drove the family car behind the moving truck. Her father never drove. He walked to his Fulton County job every day. Helen finished High School in Atlanta and started her long career with Sears, Roebucks & Co as a bookkeeper. When her parents died she moved to Buckhead and was a member of Wieuca Baptist church for many years. When Campbellstone Apts. opened in Sandy Springs, she was first in and became a member of Mt Vernon Baptist Church. On her 100th Birthday Campbellstone had a celebration for her with all residents invited. After 34 years at Campbellstone Miss Carter moved to Delmar Gardens in Smyrna. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her niece, Frances Malone and two nephews, Dan and Paul Malone. She is survived by a nephew Norman Malone of Sugar Valley, a niece Bobbie Malone Shirley of Smyrna. Six grand-nephews, Warren Malone, Kevin Malone, Danny Malone, Randy Shirley, Michael Shirley, and Timothy Shirley. Twelve great-grand-nieces and nephews also survive. Her funeral will be conducted in the Old Sugar Valley Baptist Church Saturday, October 5th at 1PM with Dr. Bert Vaughn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family receives friends Saturday from 12 noon until the funeral hour at the church. The family request that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Old Sugar Valley Baptist Church % Zeta Brown, 249 Harbour Road, Sugar Valley,Georgia, 30746. Thomas Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral services for Helen Carter.
