Mr. George W. Sewell, age 92 of Calhoun, passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2014 following an extended illness.
George was born in Gilmer County, August 9, 1922, a son of the late James Jackson Sewell and Sarah Crump Sewell. Also he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Florence Hall; five brothers, Leonard, Dennis, Denver, Otis and C.L. Sewell; one sister, Susie Hunter; and two sons in law, James Thomason and Wayne Carver.
George lived most of his life in Gordon County except his U.S. Army service during World War II in Patton’s 9th Armored Division. He loved to garden, work the lake, and cut wood. He was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation and a member of the Blackwood Springs Baptist Church.
George is survived by two sons, Jerry Sewell and his wife Elaine and Phillip Sewell; five daughters, Christine Ray and her husband Farril, Dixie Carver, Janice Howard and her husband Larry, Ellen Pierce and her husband Larry and Judy Thomason; one brother, Jesse Sewell of Calhoun; sixteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00PM Saturday, October 25th from the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with the Reverend Farril Ray officiating. Burial will follow in Fain Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12:30PM until the funeral hour at 2:00PM at Thomas Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Tony Ray, Brandon Ray, Bennie White, Terry White, Doug Thomason, and Steve Thomason. They are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:30 PM Saturday.
