George Evan Owens, age 95 of Calhoun, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2017 in Gordon Hospital following a brief illness.
George was born on March 16, 1922 in Gordon County to the late Sam Owens and Mae Montgomery Owens. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Chitwood Owens; daughter, Sandra Owens Bearden; son, Keith Owens; granddaughter, Natalie Bearden; and two brothers, Don R. Owens, and James S. Owens. George was a WWII Veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, serving as a pilot and dentist, and was honorably discharged after having contracted rheumatic fever. He was a member of Pine Chapel United Methodist Church.
George is survived by three nieces, Debra C. Owens of Calhoun, Kim Owens Tilman of Marathon, FL, and Diana Owens Layson of Calhoun; nephew, David M. Owens of Calhoun; step-grandson, Mark S. Bearden of Calhoun. Several cousins, special caregivers, friends and other relatives also survive.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Wednesday, June 28th at 4 PM from the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Reverend Wesley Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers serving are Chris Taylor, L.P. Owens, Lamar Owens, Hubert Long, Marvin Roberts, and Jim Phillips.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 5 PM until 7 PM at Thomas Funeral Home.
