Mrs. Eva Josephine Gladney, age 89 of Calhoun died at 3:03 PM, Monday, September 28, 2009 in Floyd Medical Center.
Jo was born, January 22, 1920 in Plainville, a daughter of the late Homer R. Bailey and Zoe Hopper Bailey. Jo retired from Mount Alto Carpet Company of Calhoun. She was a long time member of the Calhoun First Methodist Church as an active member she served in many positions of service and participated in many outreach ministries. After her retirement she became involved in many historical societies. Jo served as an officer in the Daughters of the American Revolution for many years and was a delegate to the Continental Congress and Regent in 1983 – 1985. She was also a member of the Daughters of American Colonist, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Georgia Historical Society. Jo’s passion was her family heritage having spent countless hours researching it. This culminated in publishing a book on her family genealogy. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Clay “Nippy” Fox in 1973 and her second husband, Hoyt Gladney in 1985 as well as a nephew, Robert B. Bailey, Jr. in January 2009.
Survivors include one brother: Robert B. Bailey, Sr. and his wife Gladys of Birmingham, AL. Her niece, Rebecca Jacks and her husband Carl and a nephew, Richard Bailey and his wife Judy.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Friday, October 2 from the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Dr. Brian Clark officiating. Burial will be in Fain Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 AM Friday preceding the funeral service.
Honorary escort will be the Board of Stewards of the First United Methodist Church of Calhoun.
Jo Gladney loved life and loved meeting and serving people. She was a women of strength and compassion, was a servant of God and will be missed.
