Ellis Zachary Woods, 88, of 260 Earl Street, Plainville. pass away at his home Saturday morning March 26th after an extended illness. Ellis was born in Plainville, Georgia, May 25, 1922. He and his wife, Hildreth, celebrated the same birthday, were the same age, both were born at their homes and were delivered by the same doctor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Callie Scott Woods and siblings, Jo Ellis, Max Woods, Dorothy Moore, Tom Woods, and Burt Woods. He is survived by his wife, Hildreth Floyd Woods to whom he was married 67 years. A daughter, Pam Treglown and her husband Jim. Granddaughters, Stephanie Pearson and her husband Justin and Megan Treglown. One great-grandson, Caden Pearson, age 3. A much extended family also survives. Ellis graduated from Plainville High School and the Carroll-Lynn Business School in Rome. He was a well known executive in the carpet industry in the North Georgia area. He began his career as a shoe salesman in Belk Rhodes shoe department and from there went to Brighton Mills in Shannon, sweeping and cleaning looms on 3rd shift. The day after Pearl Harbor was bombed he joined the Navy and spent almost 4 years with the military. When he returned from service, he returned to Brighton and soon became a supervisor. He then joined Ted Munchak at Trend Mills as plant manager of two carpet plants, one in Dalton and one in Plainville, which he was instrumental in bringing to Plainville. When Trend Mills was sold he worked for Aldons and plant manager, then Beaver Creek Carpet Company as president. From there to Textile Rubber and Chemical Company as plant manager. He retired in 1979 and thoroughly enjoyed his retirement. Ellis was a true sports enthusiast. He played baseball during the war for various military base teams. In 1941 and then when he returned from military service. From 1946-1952 he played for the Northwest Georgia Textile League, a semi-pro league. He then turned to golf as his sport. He was the Calhoun Elks Golf Club Champion 1956-1958, 1961-1963 and 1965. He also won the Alvin Everett Memorial Golf Championship at Callier Springs Golf Club in Rome in 1960. He was the Georgia Elks Golf Tournament Championship winner in 1959. He enjoyed playing golf 3-4 times a week through 2009. Ellis was a member of the Calhoun Elks Lodge and was Exalted Ruler in 1960-61 and at the time of his death was its oldest surviving Exalted Ruler. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, Masons, and Shriners. He was a charter member of Plainville Independent Methodist Church where he was chairman of the board for 30 years, giving it up just last November. He set goals for his family and him. He wanted Pam to visit all 50 states which was completed in 1972. Now both granddaughters have been in all 50 states. He loved God, family, his church, his country, life and Plainville, Ga. He always told everyone he was the "pea picker from Plainville." He always wanted to help those in need. His motto in work and life was "firm but fair." He had wonderful caregivers and helpers. Those include Cindy Gossage, Audrie Long, Mary Herrington, Melba Nicholson, Mark Autry, Wally Voelker, Billy Wilkey, Bo and Christy Nicholson, and Transitions Hospice Care. Funeral service will be conducted Sunday March 27th at 4pm from the Plainville Independent Methodist Church. With Rev. Bobby Stephens and Rev. Hoyt Coker officiating. Music will be arranged by Amber Lee and Marie Lewis. Burial will follow in the Franklin Cemetery. Pallbearers serving include; Richards Moore, Sam Ellis, Tom Woods, Terrelle Byerley, Dempsey Wright, Chad Floyd, Mark Autry and Wally Voelker.
