Edward Lee Fuquea

November 28, 2010 Edward Lee Fuguea, age 84, of Fairmount. Died Friday November 26th. In Gordon Health Care. Edward always considered the area around Ranger and Fairmont, Georgia as home. Although he was born April 18, 1926 in Newton Falls, Ohio to Mary Taylor and James Carl Fuquea, Ed’s family returned to the Ranger area when he was a young boy. Growing up there during the Great Depression taught him that he didn’t need all the material pleasures of life to be happy. He was a talented musician and singer, playing numerous instruments and participating in many community singing groups throughout his life. Following the footsteps of his older brother, Tommy, as soon as he was old enough and graduated from high school, Ed joined the service to fight in World War II. As did his father during the First World War, Ed enlisted into the United States Navy in 1943 at the age of 17. He was very proud to have served in both the European and Pacific Theaters of war, celebrating the end of the War in August 1945 on the island of Samar in the Philippines. After returning home after the War, Ed left the Navy but soon rejoined and made the Navy his career. As an expert in radar technology, he sailed throughout the world and served his country for over 20 years, retiring as a Master Chief Petty Officer (Operations Specialist) in 1964. He retired initially in Jamestown, Rhode Island, raising six children. While there, he was very involved in the local church choir, the community chorus and the town council for several years. He worked as an electronics technical writer for both Raytheon Corporation and Sperry Rand, but Ed also thrived in his own television repair business for many years. After spending some years in Clearwater, Florida, Ed returned to his boyhood home in 1992. His last 18 years were spent in the Fairmont/Calhoun area. He remained active in the arts. He was a member of several square dancing and church organizations until moving to Gordon Health Care Assisted Living in Calhoun in 2006. Besides his parents Edward was preceded in death by his son Michael Fuquea. Survivors include two sons; Robert Fuquea of Kinston, RI., and Col. David Fuquea and his wife Susan of North Topsail, NC.. Three daughters; Carol Weremay of Coventon, RI., Margaret Fuquea and her partner Cheryl Eldred of Pleasanton, CA., and Suzy Fuquea of Santiago, Chile. One sister, Beth Fielder along with four grandchildren also survive. Memorial services will be conducted Wednesday December 1st at 11AM from the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home. With LCDR Rev. Jether Cochran officiating. Burial will follow in the Georgia National Cemetery at 2PM with full military rites.
