Thursday, March 25, 2010 Chief Petty Officer Reuben Grant Houchins USNR, age 84, of Plainville. Died Wednesday March 24th in the Redmond Regional Hospital. Chief Houchins was born September 26, 1925 in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. Son of the late Thomas Grant and Maggie Brazier Houchins. He was retired from the United States Navy after 30 years of services as an aircraft mechanic during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was a member of the Oothcalooga Baptist Church and was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas H. Houchins, sister, Betty Martin and two great grandchildren; Will Jacob Cannon and Nekadin Eric Cannon. Survivors include his wife of 45 years Laura “Lucy” Bailey Houchins of Plainville. Children; Michael Houchins of Chattanooga, Garry Houchins of Grand Prairie, Texas, Patricia Ann Spencer of Arlington, Texas, Veda Barner and her husband Kyle of Big Sky, MT, Ronnie Cannon and his wife Jane of Adairsville, Tommy Cannon and his wife Debra of Rome, Paula Tallent of Chattanooga and Mike Denham of Douglasville. One brother, Robert Houchins and his wife Jennie of Church Hill, TN. One sister, Mary LeRoy and her husband Wesley of South Pittsburg, TN. One brother-in-law, E.M. (Bob) Bailey of Plainville. Two sisters-in-law; Bernice Bailey of Calhoun and Nancy Houchins of Manchester,TN.. Twenty-Two grandchildren and ten great grandchildren also survive. Memorial services will be conducted Saturday March 27th at 2pm from the Oothcalooga Baptist Chruch. With Rev. Gary Hibberts and Rev. Ken Hinkley officiating. The United States Navy will afford military rites. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 until 9 pm at the funeral home. The family request that in lieu of flowers that donations can be made to the Oothcalooga Baptist Church @ 10 Woody Road, Adairsville, Georgia, 30103.
