Reverend Clay Stephens, age 87 of Calhoun died Monday evening April 25 at Morning Point of Calhoun.
Clay was born, May 3, 1923 in Gordon County, son of the late Albert Stephens and Clemmie Dutton Stephens. He was a well-known area Pastor who conducted services for many years at Morning Point, Calhoun Health Care, and Gordon Health Care. He also pastored the following Churches of God: Ashwood, Eton Chapel, and Towe's Chapel. He and his wife Verta, who died May 24, 2008, and daughter Retta sang for many occasions as the" Stephens Family".
Clay retired from Southern Bell after many years of service as cable technician. He was a World War II Veteran and a member of the Sonora Masonic Lodge # 221, F. And A.M.
Clay is survived by his daughter, Retta S. Ledbetter of Calhoun; and two grandchildren, Jon Ledbetter and Clay Peek; a niece, Jackie Stamey and a nephew, Danny Cline
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 28 at the Calhoun Community Church with the Reverends Jerry Rice, Howard Strickland, and Dwaine Shadix officiating. John Ledbetter and Clay Peek, grandsons of Mr. Stephens will deliver eulogies. Cary Studdard and Scott Marshall will have charge of music, and burial will be in Gordon Memorial Gardens. The body of Mr. Stephens will lie in state from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the church preceding the service, and the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 PM, Wednesday at Calhoun Community Church.
Active pallbearers are Danny Cline, Derrick Dickard, Laine Lawson, Grady Burger, Paul Gentry Sr., Harold Stamey, John Ledbetter, and Clay Peek. They are asked to meet at the church at 9:45 AM, Thursday. Honorary escort are the staff members of Morning Point and At Peace Hospice. They are asked to meet at the church at 10:30 AM, Thursday.
