Mrs. Imogene Smith Hammond, age 86, of Calhoun. Died Sunday morning February 17th in her home surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Hammond was born in Cherokee County May 27, 1921. Daughter of the late Jason and Annie Nuchols Smith. She was a wife, mother, and grandmother who loved her family. She was married to the late Rev. Hollis Hammond for 64 years and spent 50 of those years as a ministers wife.She was very active in the church that her husband pastored. She loved children and was a school bus driver for 30 years. Imogene was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church and was a Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star with 50 years of services. She was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth B. Hammond, two brothers, Elmer and J.T. Smith also precede her.
Survivors include one son, Wm. David Hammond and his wife Dana. Two daughters, Sharyn H. Smith and Jackie Miller and her husband Dennis all of Calhoun. One brother, Edward Smith and a sister, Ruth S. Shadburn both of Canton. Six grandchildren, Kenny Hammond, Chris Smith, Brittney Miller, Jamie Miller, Taylor Hammond and Hunter Hammond. Three great-grandchildren, Brooke Thomas, Kendra Hammond, and Ansley Miller. One great-great-grandchild, Hagan Thomas. Nieces and Nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday February 19th at 3PM from the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Dr. Tommy McDearis and Rev. Jimmy Hammond officiating. Burial will follow in Fain Cemetery with Rev. Jacky Waits in charge of the graveside rites.
Pallbearers serving include, Hunter Hammond, Chris Smith, Chad Bell, Kenny Hammond, Steve Rickett, and Steve Miller.
The family will receive friends Monday afternoon 5 until 8:30pm.
The family request that in addition to flowers donation may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
