Charles "Jack" Pershing Thompson, age 91, of Calhoun. Died at his residence Saturday morning July 10th. Following and extended illness.
Charles was born May 6, 1919 in Lindale, Georgia. Son of the late John Perry and Varney Weaver Thompson. He had lived for many years in Yonkers, NY and Orlando, FL before moving back to Calhoun in 1984. He was a retired plumber and member of the Echota Baptist Church. Charles was a veteran of the United States Army serving during WWII as a medic in the Pacific Theater and was a member of the American Legion Post 305 and was a charter member of the Renis Barrett Post 5376 .
He was a great fan of softball and was a pitcher on many teams here and in Yonker. He worked very hard to have a baseball field built at the VFW Post for the young people of Calhoun and it bears his name.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald and John Perry Jr. and his sister Mildred Janes.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Leoma Phillips Thompson of Calhoun. One son, John Thomas Thompson of Carolina Beach, NC. Two daughters; Martha Maguire of Mahopac, NY., and Sandra S. Hogan and her husband William of Cartersville. Six grandchildren; William Maguire of Granite Springs, NY, Kelly Harris of Mahopac, NY, Tina Eister of Kennesaw, Barbara Martin of Cartersville, Lee Ann Thompson of Boynton Beach, FL and Aaron Thompson of Carolina Beach, NC and thirteen Great grandchildren also survives.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday July 12th at 11am. From the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home. With Rev. Mitch Phillips and Rev. Tommy Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Chandler Cemetery with full military rites.
The family will receive friends after 5pm Sunday evening.
