Carlton Thomas Hyde, age 86, of Resaca, passed away Saturday morning July 6th in Advent Gordon.
Carlton was born July 20, 1937, the son of the late Albert Thomas Hyde and Lonita Kendrick Hyde Hamrick. Carlton was a veteran of the United States Army, upon completing basic training as a rifleman and combat soldier his attributes and skills earned him advancement into a combat engineering unit where he qualified as a specialist and team member responsible for building bridges across rivers. He also trained in Washington State and became qualified as a specialist and team member responsible for the logistics, movement, transportation, set-up, and operation of large guns, cannons, and heavy artillery. After leaving the army, Carlton began working as a firefighter for the City of Calhoun, where in 1965, at the age of 27, he became the youngest man to ever be promoted to the position of Chief of the Calhoun Fire Department. His civic deputy did not end with the fire department from 1972 to 1974, he worked at the Calhoun Water Treatment Plant, and from 1974 to 1995, he worked at the Gordon County Fire Department where he retired as a lieutenant. Carlton never liked the word retirement, because throughout those years he was a tractor-truck driver working for several local companies. He loved his country and his community and served it to the best of his abilities all of his life.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Glenda Hyde Smith.
He is survived by his son Steve Hyde, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
