Geneva Blankenship Barton, age 88, of the Sonoraville Community died at 6:22 PM Thursday June 3 at her residence. Geneva was born in Gordon County, January 28, 1922, daughter of the late Howard Lenvel Blankenship and Gussie Jo Bowles Blankenship. She was a Gordon County native but had lived from 1948 to 1983 in Atlanta. She was a member of the Sonoraville Baptist Church and had formerly served as pianist. She was an active member of the Adult IV Sunday School Class, the W.M.U., the Prime Timers, Mission Friends, and was a Sunday School Class teacher. Formerly she and her family had attended the Brown's Mill Park Baptist Church of Atlanta. She was an alumna of Sonoraville High School and was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Geneva is survived by her husband, Lawrence N. Barton of the Sonoraville Community; three sons, Neal Barton and his wife Bobbie Jo of Lilburn, Steve Barton of Conyers, John Barton and his wife Sandy of the Sonoraville Community; five grandchildren, Laura Martin and her husband Brad, Jeff Barton and his wife Caitlin, Rachel Barton, Sarah Barton, and John Robert Barton, Jr.; three great grandchildren, Zach Martin, Chandler Martin, and Brooks Barton. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 PM, Sunday, June 6 at the Sonoraville Baptist Church with the Reverends Stephen Skates, Jether Cochran, and Clarence Drummond officiating. Ronnie Hammontree will have charge of music. Burial will be in the church cemetery, and the body of Mrs. Barton will lie in state from 3:00 until 4:00 PM preceding the funeral. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 PM, and 6:00 until 8:00 PM, Saturday at the funeral home. Active pallbearers are Jeff Barton, John Robert Barton, Jr., Brad Martin, Charlie Durden, John Troy Barton, Jr., and Jimmy Barton. They are asked to meet at the church at 2:45 PM Sunday. Honorary escort is the Sonoraville Baptist Church Deacons and the members of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. They are asked to meet at the church at 3:45 PM Sunday. Memorial contributions may be given to the Sonoraville Baptist Church in addition to flowers. Online condolences may be recorded at www.thomasfuneralhomecalhoun.com.
